Mali Passes New Defense Law to Strengthen Unified Command & Security

The new law, unanimously approved by all 125 members of the National Transitional Council, aims to improve coordination across Mali's defense and security forces under a more unified command structure.

The draft law repeals 22-year-old legislation dating back to 2004. It has become obsolete in light of contemporary geopolitical changes, stated the Minister of Internal Security and Civil Protection, Daoud Aly Mohammedine.

Key provisions include:

▪Militarizing the national police and civil protection services;

▪Creating new structures within the armed forces, including a unified operational command under the authority of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces to oversee the operational defense of the country;

▪Expanding the legal framework to address modern security challenges, including cybersecurity and cybercrime.

The bill will now be sent to transitional President Assimi Goïta for promulgation.
