Cameroon Launches Pilot Program for Long-Acting Injectable HIV Prevention Drug 'Cabotegravir'

Cameroon Launches Pilot Program for Long-Acting Injectable HIV Prevention Drug 'Cabotegravir'
The injection is administered once every two months and is up to 95% effective at preventing HIV infection, Public Health Minister Manaouda Malachie said, emphasizing that Cabotegravir is designed to complement—not replace—condoms, regular HIV testing, or medical follow-ups, providing another prevention option for people at high risk.
Success depends on:
▪ clear public information;
▪ medical supervision;
▪ community engagement to reduce stigma and increase uptake.
The launch comes as Cameroon moves closer to achieving two of the UN's "95-95-95" HIV targets:
96.4% of people diagnosed with HIV are receiving treatment;
95% of those on treatment have achieved viral suppression.
