Crafting Africa’s Trade Strategy Against Weaponization of Global Trade

“Economic buffer goes beyond foreign reserves. There should be a buffer in terms of food reserve. There should be a buffer in terms of fuel reserve. You have a storage of petrol, you have storage of diesel and storage of crude oil. In case we have certain shocks in the global economy, we have reserves in terms of fertilizer; we have reserves in terms of medical products and [what have you]. So, when you have some of these strategic reserves, whenever all of this issue hits, your susceptibility to being hit will be minimal compared to what we currently experience.”

On #PanAfricanFrequency, Sodik Olofin, economist at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, discussed why he believes African economies feel external shocks deeply and quickly when global trade becomes weaponized, and the practical shields that countries can put in place to buffer against trade coercion by external influences.
