Egypt Unveils 18 Ancient Tombs in Marina El Alamein & Byzantine-Era Settlement in Dakhla Oasis
In Marina El Alamein– on the northern coast – archaeologists have now brought the site's total to 44 tombs since 1986. The latest batch includes 11 rock-cut tombs and 7 limestone surface tombs.
The area is being developed into a cultural tourism hub, with plans for a visitor center, theater, and museum storage—all expected to be ready by early 2027, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
In the Dakhla Oasis – deep in the Western Desert – researchers uncovered residential and religious quarters from the fourth century, including:
▪ A basilica-style church
▪ Watchtowers and fortifications
▪ The house of a church deacon named Tisous, which served as a house church before the basilica was built
Other finds include bread ovens, kitchens, grinding tools, bronze coins with Christian symbols, and gold coins from the reign of Roman Emperor Constantius II (337–361).
