US Decision on UN Support Could End AU Mission in Somalia

The AU's nearly 12,000-strong Somalia mission, AUSSOM, bolsters the Mogadishu government against al-Shabaab, relying on UN support for essential logistics including food, water, fuel, medical care, and troop transport.

In a July 1 diplomatic note, Washington reportedly informed the AU it would not support the UN Support Office in Somalia with a budget at around $500 million beyond this year.

The US would not oppose renewing the AU mandate but would block any extension with UN logistical or operational support.

AUSSOM's budget was $190 million last year, but financing has become increasingly precarious. Washington previously blocked a plan to shift to a UN-funded model covering three-quarters of the budget.

On Thursday, the AU Commission warned members that the US decision carries "significant implications for the logistical sustainment, operational posture and financing of the Mission."
