DRC Launches Clinical Trials of Potential Treatments for Bundibugyo Ebola Strain: WHO Chief

On Thursday, the first patient received one of two experimental treatments being tested against the current Ebola strain, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Patients taking part in the trial will receive full supportive care and be closely monitored to assess the effectiveness of the treatments, he noted.

"Even without approved therapeutics, many people are recovering from this disease, but of course, we could save more lives with safe and effective therapeutics in our toolkit," Ghebreyesus emphasized.

The study is being led by the DRC's National Institute of Biomedical Research, with support from international partners including the WHO.

It is currently testing two approaches: an antibody-based therapy and an antiviral drug.
