Cancer research is entering a promising new chapter as scientists continue to uncover the disease’s hidden biology. New findings are offering deeper insight into how tumors evade the body’s immune system, opening fresh possibilities for earlier diagnosis, more targeted therapies, and future vaccines against some of the world’s most common cancers.
Global South Pole spoke with Kevin Naidoo, professor of Scientific Computing and Physical Chemistry at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, who headed the team behind the discovery, about how decoding one of cancer’s hidden survival mechanisms could reshape future diagnostics, vaccines, and targeted therapies while showcasing Africa’s growing role in frontier biomedical research.
Naidoo said the breakthrough demonstrates the value of combining computational science with biology to solve some of medicine’s most complex problems. He believes the work provides a foundation for future research and shows that African scientists can produce globally significant discoveries capable of driving the next generation of medical innovation.

“I would like to believe that this is a milestone achievement in demonstrating that even with resources, we can do very cutting-edge science and discover things that are often just discovered in very, very well-equipped, very wealthy universities. We’ve managed to do this here. So this gives us great hope, and it gives us great hope that if we got the right support we could do this across the board,” Prof. Naidoo said.
