UN to Close Its Human Rights Office in Burkina Faso
The UN will invoke a clause applicable in cases of prolonged suspension, said the UN’s acting resident coordinator, Maurice Azonnankpo, following a meeting with Burkinabe Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré.
In April, Ouagadougou suspended the office’s activities after High Commissioner Volker Türk accused Burkina Faso of restricting civic space.
A national focal point will be appointed to coordinate the six-month closure, according to a statement from Burkina Faso's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
