Africa Can Lead Digital Revolution, Not Just Follow, Says South African President
The continent has a unique opportunity to lead its own industrialization through cloud computing and artificial intelligence, Cyril Ramaphosa has said, speaking at the first Google Cloud Summit in Johannesburg.
"For far too long, Africa has had to play digital catch-up with the world’s leading and most industrialized economies. We are now presented with a unique opportunity to be in the driving seat," Ramaphosa said.
He described AI and cloud computing as comparable in significance to the invention of electricity, the steam engine, and the internet.

🟠A 2024 McKinsey report shows that cloud adoption in major African companies is on par with—and in some cases ahead of—North America and China.
🟠South Africa hosts about 70% of Africa's data center capacity and is a major investment hub for tech startups.

The Google Cloud Summit in Johannesburg marks the first time the global conference has been held in Africa.
