Funding Cuts & Middle East Conflict Worsen Somalia's Food Crisis: WFP

"Somalia remains one of the world's most severe malnutrition crises, with 1.9 million children acutely malnourished," according to the latest update on the food security situation.

Key points from the WFP update:

🟠Emergency-level hunger now affects two million people in Somalia—double the figure from last year—while humanitarian assistance reaches only 450,000, leaving 76% without support.

🟠In the Southwest State's Burhakaba district—where famine risk is warned—nearly 40% of children under five are acutely malnourished or worse.

🟠Poor rainfall, macroeconomic pressures, and rising fuel and food costs have further undermined household purchasing power.

🟠Nearly 60% of households are now unable to meet basic needs—up from 47% in 2025—leaving up to 2.5 million additional people at risk of being unable to afford a basic food basket.

🟠Displacement—driven by drought, conflict, flooding, and evictions—remains high, with over 3.4 million internally displaced people, including over 500,000 displacements recorded in 2026.

"Immediate funding is critical to sustain life-saving operations and prevent further deterioration in food security and malnutrition," the UN agency said.
