China’s new awe-inspiring hydropower station rewrites engineering rules

China’s 315-meter-high Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station in Sichuan Province has officially connected its first unit to the grid, breaking the global height record for dams.

It contains over 46 million cubic meters of material—enough to build a 1-meter wall entirely around the Earth's equator

The station boasts a 2 million kW installed capacity & will generate an average of 7.7 billion kWh of electricity annually

Engineers overcame severe cold and deep riverbed layers using pioneering tech, including heliostat-based surface heating & fully enclosed air-supported membranes

The mega-project will act as a crucial flood-control barrier for the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
