African Accent is 'Good Form of Linguistic Decolonization': Nigerian Expert

Preserving the African accent over Western norms is a return to "linguistic originality" that sets Africans apart globally, Adetunbowale Babalola, an expert in media linguistics and phonology, told Sputnik Africa.

The expert outlined five levels of this decolonization:

🟠Individual: Embracing self-identity and accepting one's accent.

🟠Cultural: Promoting African linguistic traits via music and film.

🟠Economic: Leveraging the accent as a valued competitive advantage.

🟠Technological: Adapting technology to the African market.

🟠Geopolitical: Rejecting Western accents as the standard to make room for other English variants.
