South African Government Reassures Public as Anti-Immigration Deadline Nears: Correspondent
The country's interministerial committee on immigration held a media briefing in Pretoria to update on the government's comprehensive migration strategy, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported.
The committee, convened by Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, brought together the police, home affairs, and labor ministries to coordinate the response.
The government reiterated that June 30 is a "normal working day," despite calls by anti-illegal immigration NGOs for all undocumented immigrants to leave the country by that date.
Police and law enforcement agencies will be deployed to cities where major protests are expected to ensure law and order, according to Minister Kubayi.
SADC is working on cross-border management as a regional issue, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola noted.
