Legendary Soviet Gymnast Slams Romania’s Symbol Ban & Supports Russian Team’s Tournament Withdrawal
The Russian team was right to withdraw from the gymnastics tournament in the Romanian town of Cluj-Napoca after the local mayor banned the Russian flag and anthem, defying the International Gymnastics Federation's official approval, Lydia Ivanova, two-time Olympic gymnastics champion, coach and judge, told Sputnik.
"The international federation known as FIG decided to allow Russian gymnasts to compete with their anthem and flag. This was a clear signal: Russia is back, and even those who do not favor us recognize this," she noted.
Calling the incident "minor bites," Ivanova urged Russia to take legal action, filing appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary.
"Let Romania mind its own business—and we will perform where we are respected," she concluded.
