Nairobi on High Alert Ahead of Gen Z Protest Anniversary: Correspondent
Heavy security has been deployed around Kenya's Parliament Buildings ahead of planned memorial protests marking the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 anti‑finance bill demonstrations, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported.
🟠Large numbers of anti‑riot police and other security personnel were stationed along Parliament Road, with barbed wire barricades erected around key government installations and access routes restricted in parts of Nairobi's Central Business District.
🟠Police roadblocks and traffic disruptions were reported on several routes, with some businesses closed and commuters forced to walk after public service vehicles were blocked from accessing the CBD.
🟠The measures aim to protect government installations and maintain public order, authorities said.
The commemorations come two years after thousands of young demonstrators breached Parliament grounds in protests that resulted in clashes, deaths, injuries, and major political consequences.
