DRC Demands Belgium Return Hundreds of Colonial-Era Skulls: Reports
The request to return the looted human remains was made in a letter from DRC Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka to the Belgian prime minister, according to Western media.
Key facts about these restitution efforts:
🟠Over 500 human remains from the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi are still held in Belgian institutions.
🟠Around 260 skulls from the collection were displayed for the first time in November 2025.
🟠The DRC has been pursuing restitution of cultural artefacts for eight years, as debates over historical accountability continue across Europe.
"The dead must be able to rest in dignity in their country of origin and must not be regarded merely as collector's items," said Tuluka, according to the reports.
