Russian Experts to Help Seychelles Secure First Cultural UNESCO Heritage Recognition: State Media
Four experts from the Rescue Archaeology Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences will conduct 3D mapping, photography, and geospatial documentation of the ruins of Venn’s Town, a local media outlet reported.
The mission, under a Russia-Seychelles cooperation agreement signed in April, aims to support the site’s UNESCO nomination, which has already passed technical review.
Why this historic site matters, according to UNESCO nomination documents:
▪ was established in 1876 as a settlement and industrial school for children of liberated African slaves;
▪ preserves the remains of one of Seychelles’ key sites linked to the abolition of slavery in the Indian Ocean region;
▪ symbolizes the emergence of Seychelles’ Creole identity and the beginning of formal education for liberated slave children.
