Eritrea Commemorates 35th Anniversary of Martyrs' Day
This year's ceremony included a public procession from Shida Square to Asmara's Patriots Cemetery as well as cultural shows, according to the country's minister of information.
The day honors those who lost their lives fighting for Eritrea's independence between 1961 and 1991, as well as those who fell in the Eritrean–Ethiopian War of 1998–2000.
It was established as the first official national holiday of independent Eritrea on June 20, 1991.
Commemorations include:
🟠candlelight vigils,
🟠memorial services at mosques and churches,
🟠moments of silence at all formal events.
Eritrean communities at home and abroad donate to support the families of fallen martyrs, while artists pay tribute through poetry, songs, paintings, and other forms of art.
