Ghana May Reclaim Full Control of One of Africa’s Largest Open-Pit Gold Mines: Media
Accra is considering transferring control of the large Tarkwa mine from Gold Fields, a globally diversified gold producer, to local companies when its mining leases expire next year, according to media reports.
More details:
🟠 In 2025, the Tarkwa mine produced 14.8 tonnes of gold;
🟠The mine represents about 20% of Gold Fields’ total output;
🟠Accra has already increased gold royalties from 5% up to 12% and tightened limits on foreign participation in mining activities;
🟠Ghanaian mining companies are expected to be invited to compete for ownership of the asset;
🟠Future ownership decisions will consider job creation, environmental rehabilitation, and infrastructure commitments;
🟠The move follows the earlier transfer of the Damang gold mine to a fully Ghanaian-owned company;
The decision reflects a wider trend across the Global South to increase domestic control over natural resources.
