Ghana Conference Adopts Reparative Justice Strategy in Accra
A new framework provides a roadmap to ensure fair and adequate compensation for all Africans and people of African descent who suffered from slavery, colonialism, genocide, and apartheid, the Ghanaian Foreign Ministry said after the meeting.
Key points:
🟠Multilateral measures are also being considered to ease sovereign debt burdens, including restructuring and cancellation, aimed at addressing socio-economic challenges linked to slavery, colonialism, and related historical injustices;
🟠The discussions also include accelerating the return of cultural monuments, human remains, archives, and other heritage items to their countries of origin;
🟠The meeting further announced the creation of several commissions to oversee the implementation of these initiatives.
According to Ghanaian President John Mahama, the proposed expert commission on reparatory justice would include heads of state with historical links to the slave trade, including himself, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley, and the presidents of Liberia, Namibia, and Senegal.
