Barbados PM Unveils New Reparations Manifesto

It includes new calls for compensation, including for gender-based violence, and "inextricably" links climate justice to reparations, said Mia Mottley at the High-Level Consultative Conference in Ghana on the UN resolution on slave trade.

"CARICOM demands monetary compensation as reparations from enslaving nations, monarchies, churches, institutions, corporations, and families."

According to Mottley, compensations are to be paid for:

🟠loss of life,
🟠uncompensated labor,
🟠loss of liberty,
🟠personal injury,
🟠mental pain and anguish,
🟠gender-based violence,
🟠victims of Indigenous genocide,
🟠transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans,
🟠chattel enslavement of Africans.

"Women represented approximately 30% of the estimated 20 million Africans forcefully transported across the Atlantic Ocean," with at least 1.2 million enslaved women experiencing sexual violence, she added.

"That others choose to remain silent is a reflection of them, not of us," she highlighted, describing the conference as a "historic moment."
