Tanzania has Africa’s largest lion population at 17,200, ahead of South Africa and Kenya, media reported, citing the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute’s 2024–2025 census.
Buffalo boom, clear leader
The country also tops the continent in buffalo numbers, with a staggering 328,000—far surpassing second-place South Africa, which has just 46,000, according to the media.
A troubling trend for elephants
However, the country is witnessing a sharp decline in its elephant population over the past two decades, media noted.
Despite certain successes in wildlife conservation, the government must initiate a national discussion on restoring the elephant population, parliamentary committee on natural resources chairman Timoteo Mnzava was quoted by the media as saying.
