Donors Pledge $910 Million as Ebola Outbreak Reaches 'Critical Tipping Point': Africa CDC
Including $80 million from AU member states, the funds will support the Ebola response in DRC and Uganda, the Africa CDC announced following a virtual presidential meeting.
The regional agency noted that as of June 15, the outbreak has 827 confirmed cases and 194 deaths:
The DRC: 808 cases, 192 deaths
Uganda: 19 cases, 2 deaths
Key outcomes of the meeting:
🟠A $518 million six‑month joint response plan was endorsed;
🟠Leaders called for a seven‑day operational surge to boost contact tracing, treatment, and community engagement;
🟠No licensed vaccines or therapeutics are available for the Bundibugyo strain;
🟠 Blanket travel bans are not supported by public health evidence.
"Africa must move from recurrent emergency appeals to predictable preparedness investment," Africa CDC's Dr. Jean Kaseya said, welcoming the pledges.
The meeting also endorsed $100 million annual voluntary financing from African states and the private sector for epidemic preparedness and local manufacturing.
