IGAD Expresses Concern Over Somaliland Embassy in Israel, Stresses Somalia's Sovereignty
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development has warned against "any action or initiative that undermines the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity" of Somalia, the bloc said in a statement on Thursday.
Such actions risk heightening tensions and undermining regional peace, IGAD added, reiterating its longstanding position that Somalia's unity must be fully respected, in line with the AU and UN charters.
Unrecognized Somaliland's president, Abdirahman Abdullahi, and Israeli FM Gideon Sa’ar opened the breakaway territory's Jerusalem embassy on Monday. The move follows Israel's December 2025 recognition of Somaliland and the presentation of credentials in March.
Somalia condemned the recognition as an attack on its sovereignty, drawing widespread international criticism.
