Botswana's First Major Solar Plant to Export Power Into Southern African Regional Market: Report
The 100‑megawatt Tati Solar Project has secured $100 million in financing and will sell power into the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), marking Botswana's entry into the regional electricity market, US media reported, citing an official.
The plant, developed by Etavi Renewables, is reportedly expected to reach commercial operation by 2027.
"We found a financing structure that is commercially viable at utility scale for a pure market view into the SAPP," Siyanda Mflathelwa of lead arranger Rand Merchant Bank was quoted as saying.
The SAPP serves 12 countries and over 360 million people and is increasingly vital as climate-related droughts and rising demand from mining and data centers reshape the region's power landscape.
The project is reportedly seen as a step toward unlocking cross‑border electricity trade—a key theme at recent African energy forums, where officials emphasized stronger continental cooperation in the power sector.
