Political analyst Khonya Mathonsi joins Sputnik in-studio to dissect the true legacy of June 16 and the Soweto Uprisings. He breaks down the stark contrast between Western "talk" and Soviet military aid during the anti-apartheid struggle and explains why SA's youth are still left behind today.
In this hard-hitting interview, South African political analyst Khonya Mathonsi delivers a critique of South Africa's historical solidarity networks and its current political landscape. Shifting the focus from standard historical narratives surrounding June 16 (Youth Day), Mathonsi highlights the critical role played by the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc in providing concrete military training and arms to anti-apartheid freedom fighters, contrasting it heavily against what he describes as the mere "talk show" solidarity of Western nations.
"As far as the Western countries, it was a talk show for them. They wanted to say the right thing, they wanted to be relevant in saying whatever that they wanted, but they didn't help much," Mathonsi opines.
Mathonsi also dives deeply into contemporary South African geopolitics. Ultimately, he presents a challenging look at the systemic failures gripping South Africa's townships and calls for a new generation of willing leadership to protect and empower the youth.
