The government has identified 106 dams with an estimated 78,159 hectares of irrigable land as part of its "A Dam is an Economy" strategy, Agriculture Minister Dr. Anxious Masuka announced.
The initiative aims to transform dams from water storage facilities into centers of agricultural production, value addition, and employment creation.
Key developments:
🟠Zimbabwe has increased irrigated land from 171,000 hectares in 2020 to 258,773 hectares as of May 2026 – a 51% growth, the fastest since independence.
🟠The target is to reach 496,000 hectares by 2030, requiring $1.66 billion to develop the remaining 237,227 hectares.
🟠Government has already secured over $82.4 million from one facility and is working on another $100 million for a contractor.
🟠Priority will be given to proven farmers who can quickly bring additional land into production.
