African Child Day: Education & Development Are Indivisible—Burundian Official

Quality and inclusive education must be a major concern for African countries, Martin Blaise Nyaboho, president of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights in Burundi, told Sputnik Africa.

"The challenges persist. The obstacles to complete education include child labor, school dropout due to unwanted pregnancies, the phenomenon of street children, drug use, and the distance to schools in certain regions," he noted.

Burundi has made progress in child protection, particularly by providing free healthcare for women in labor and children under five, the speaker added.

ℹ The African Child Day is commemorated on June 16 in memory of the children of Soweto who perished during the protests in 1976 against apartheid in South Africa.
