Senegal Parliament Speaker Sonko Softens Stance on Debt Restructuring, Says No 'Rigid Positions'
Ousmane Sonko, who previously called debt restructuring a “disgrace,” has softened his stance, saying he no longer holds “rigid positions” on the issue as Senegal’s economic conditions have worsened, partly due to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
“Today, I believe we can assess developments step by step,” he said. “We are not here to obstruct.”
Talks with the IMF on a new lending program are expected to resume after Senegal’s previous $1.8 billion program was suspended over misreported debt under the former government.
However, Sonko warned against short-term solutions that could undermine Senegal’s long-term economic goals.
