SA Launches Youth Empowerment Initiative to Boost Community Development
Acting Social Development Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga launched a Soweto outreach program marking the Youth Month and providing youth and vulnerable groups with direct access to social grants, education, and employment.
Two main focus areas
The program focuses on two main areas: agriculture and IT training, Chikunga told Sputnik Africa. She emphasized the government's commitment to supporting young people in both township agro-processing and technology.
The agriculture project engages youth in local production to supply affordable goods, Khensani Mthembi, senior manager in the National Development Agency, said.
The Second Chance initiative by the Department of Education is also important, since it provides crucial support for youth who did not pass their matric exams, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, a member of Gauteng Province's Executive Council, noted.
ℹ About Youth Month
It is dedicated to commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising of 1976, when South African students stood up against apartheid.
