Tanzania to Launch Mineral Research Fund to Boost Small-Scale Mining
Tanzania will retain 10% of gross mineral revenue collections in a new Mineral Research Fund aimed at transforming small-scale mining from a largely speculative activity into a data-driven industry, Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde said.
The initiative is part of the 2026/27 budget.
Challenges to be addressed: The fund targets long‑standing issues facing small‑scale miners, including:
limited geological data,
restricted access to capital,
outdated technology,
difficulties securing affordable financing.
Why it matters:
Small-scale mining generates around 40% of revenue from mining activities but continues to face high risks and low productivity, Mavunde said, adding that the government wants miners to adopt scientific data, modern technology, and sound business planning.
