SA Steps Up Immigration Enforcement: Statement
20:45 14.06.2026 (Updated: 22:15 14.06.2026) "Since 1st January 2026, law enforcement operations conducted across the country have resulted in the arrest of more than 40,000 illegal immigrants," Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi said at the media briefing of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration.
According to Kubayi, key measures to address illegal migration include:
Intelligence-led operations, roadblocks, compliance inspections, and multidisciplinary actions across all ports of entry;
Labor law reforms, tighter border controls, and efforts to curb corruption in the immigration system;
Improving border‑line infrastructure and related social services;
Re‑establishment of a court at the Lindela Repatriation Centre to expedite deportations;
Repatriations of foreign nationals, including from Malawi, Ghana and Nigeria;
Engaging with foreign counterparts.
"The South African government will not tolerate the circumvention of our immigration systems and laws. We also call upon employers to refrain from transgressing immigration and labor laws," she added.
