At Least 20 African & Asian Midwifery Experts Denied Visas for Int'l Midwives Congress in Portugal: Media

Midwifery experts from Nigeria, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, the DRC, Bangladesh, and India were among those barred from attending the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) congress, media said.

"Every two minutes a mother dies. These visa rejections are silencing those we most need to hear from," Kate Stringer, an adviser to the ICM, was quoted by the media as saying.

Delegates from "wealthy" countries have all been allowed entry, she added, drawing a comparison to the situation with the referee Omar Artan, which she described as “colonial bias.”

The ICM Congress says it is focused on reducing the 260,000 annual maternal deaths and 4.2 million newborn deaths in the first month of life worldwide.
