Scientists Discover New Potential Approach to Malaria Treatment
Slowing the reproduction of the malaria parasite by altering the host's body temperature could offer an addition to treating the disease, Taichi Odagawa, an assistant professor at the Jikei University School of Medicine in Tokyo, told Sputnik.
How it works:
Cooler temperatures disrupt the parasite's ability to invade new red blood cells, Odagawa noted.
"Our study found that when the malaria parasite was placed in a temperature environment lower than normal body temperature, its reproduction was suppressed."
However, he emphasized that properly using antimalarial drugs remains "the cornerstone of malaria treatment."
