Will the US-Iran Agreement Be Signed Today?
President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the agreement was expected to be signed on Sunday.
Iran, however, offered a different assessment.
"We have to wait and see exactly when the memorandum will be signed. It will not be tomorrow. It may happen in the coming days," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on June 13.
What is known about the potential agreement:
According to Trump:
🟠The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would be lifted after the agreement is signed;
🟠Tehran would no longer be able to obtain nuclear weapons;
🟠The US would take possession of Iran's enriched uranium;
🟠Iran would receive no financial assistance from the US under the agreement.
According to Iranian officials:
🟠The draft "Islamabad Memorandum" is intended to end the war, and at this stage it has been decided not to address the nuclear issue, according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei;
🟠The memorandum is less than two pages long, and every word has been discussed repeatedly. The Foreign Ministry has carefully taken all required points into account, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
As of Saturday, US and Iranian officials gave differing timelines. Trump expected a Sunday signing, while Iranian officials said the document would not be signed that day and could instead be finalized in the coming days.
