On Nnete Fela we discuss digitizing South Africa’s governance as a new SA-Russia partnership upskills public servants in digital governance. We also examine how South African firm Digital Earth Africa is democratizing earth observation technology for Africans.
We begin with the launch of the South Africa-Russia Public Sector Digital Governance Training Program between South Africa’s National School of Government and Russia’s Presidential Academy (RANEPA). We discuss how this strategic skills partnership aims to equip public servants with expertise in AI, data management and GovTech systems to modernize the state, strengthen institutional capacity and improve citizen-centered service delivery. Minister of Public Service and Administration Pinky Kekana and a host of other officials from SA and Russia join the show to discuss the importance of digital transformation.
We also examine how Digital Earth Africa is advancing data-driven water management at a time when water security is becoming a strategic priority across the continent. Using satellite data and earth observation technologies, African countries are gaining new tools to monitor water resources, improve planning and respond to rising water stress amid growing climate and infrastructure pressures. Joining us is Mpho Sadiki an earth observation scientist who discusses why it is important to build this kind of technology from an African perspective.
“So, in the world of Earth observation, especially when we create global products, let's say a water product that responds to a global challenge, we always find that Africa is poorly represented. There's barely any enough information used or fed into the models that are used to model these phenomenon on a global stage. So, to have our own version of this technology means we respond to our own challenges as Africa, and it's an African technology owned by Africa for Africa responding to African challenges by Africans” Sadiki says.
