'Never Again': Witness Urges Remembrance of Hutu Students Killed in Burundi 31 Years Ago
“We do not want one ethnic group to be crushed by another,” Athanase Bakunda, former vice-rector of the University of Burundi at the time, told Sputnik Africa.
The students were “massacred in an atrocious way,” but not all the perpetrators were Tutsis — some “did not participate” in the killings, he said.
The events also helped instill “a new spirit” and contributed to changing the regime in power at the time, according to Bakunda.
To prevent such a tragedy from happening again, it is crucial to understand “what national reconciliation means” and pass it on to future generations, the speaker added.
