SA Trade Committee Calls for Urgent Government Intervention Into Steel Sector
"The steel industry is facing a crisis that threatens thousands of jobs" and requires interventions "to support industrial growth, competitiveness, transformation, and employment," according to the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition.
Key proposed interventions:
🟠Binding commitments and enforcement of local public procurement;
🟠Targeted support for sub‑sectors such as wire and scrap metal industries;
🟠Resolution of electricity pricing negotiations and rail freight inefficiencies;
🟠Financial support for downstream industries;
🟠A rail reindustrialization compact led by the Presidency;
🟠Stronger enforcement of trade remedies to prevent circumvention and illicit, underpriced imports.
"The steel sector must be saved. However, this requires holistic government support and industry investment," said Mzwandile Masina, Chairperson of the committee.
