Former Nigerian Aviation Minister Faces Court Over Alleged Air Fraud: Media
Hadi Abubakar Sirika, Nigeria's former aviation minister, is on trial over claims he tried to pass off an Ethiopian Airlines plane as the new national carrier, Nigeria Air, a Nigerian news outlet reported, quoting a witness.
🟠What allegedly happened
The plane, painted in Nigeria Air colors, was displayed at Abuja's airport for just three days (May 27–29, 2023)—right as Sirika's time in office ended.
The charter deal with Ethiopian Airlines was signed on May 24, 2023.
After May 29, the aircraft reportedly returned to Addis Ababa.
🟠A staged launch?
The stunt involved models in Nigeria Air uniforms and was intended to simulate the airline’s launch, a witness was cited by the media.
🟠Evidence presented in court
All documents presented by the prosecution, including the charter agreement and a voice note from Sirika, were reportedly verified and not objected to by the defense.
🟠Who is facing charges?
Sirika, his family members, and a company associated with him are jointly facing charges at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.
