Global Tech Giants May Have Sourced Conflict Minerals Linked to M23 in DRC: Report
Major global companies, including Amazon, Ericsson, and Sony, have likely sourced coltan linked to the M23 rebel group through complex supply chains, according to an investigation by Global Witness, an international NGO. The report raises serious environmental and human rights concerns.
Why Coltan Matters
Coltan is used in mobile phones and other electronic devices.
The mineral was reportedly extracted from the Rubaya mines in the DRC.
These mines are controlled by the M23 group and account for about 15% of global coltan reserves.
How the M23 Profits
The group is believed to generate around $800,000 monthly from taxes on looted coltan.
This revenue directly funds its warfare, according to the investigation.
How It Reaches Global Markets
While the exact buyers of the smuggled coltan remain unknown, the report suggests that Rwandan exporters acquire the mineral from rebel-controlled sites via lightly monitored borders.
From there, it is sold through middlemen to smelters, eventually ending up in global electronics.
