On June 5, in Lagos, one of the largest cities on the African continent, a photo exhibition and film screening dedicated to Russia‑Africa relations took place on the university campus, at the Faculty of European Languages.
Guests from Moscow brought historical photographs as well as contemporary feature and documentary films reflecting the ties between the African continent, the Soviet Union, and modern Russia.
Throughout the modern history of African countries, the Soviet Union in the past and Russia today have supported the nations’ aspirations for sovereignty and independence, helping them achieve economic and political self‑reliance and providing support in the fight against terrorism.
The event’s guests—including students, schoolchildren, government representatives, and university faculty—viewed the exhibition with great interest. The documentary and feature films also drew genuine attention.
The audience not only watched what was happening on screen but also actively participated in the event. Students performed several dances and songs, and the head of the Lagos Road Traffic Police Public Relations Department gave an interesting lecture to students about her profession.
Students and faculty members spoke out in support of developing friendly relations between Russia and Nigeria. Participants appealed to the Russian side to organize such meetings, film screenings, and photo exhibitions as often as possible.
The event undoubtedly brought new, fresh, relevant, and long‑awaited information into the life of the university and Lagos.
The event was supported by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, and the university’s Russian Language Study Centre.
The clear necessity of holding such events is beyond doubt. Friendly ties between people create a foundation for developing educational programs, mutual humanitarian exchanges, strengthening economic and political ties, and maintaining the security and development of countries and the continent as a whole.
