How do we carry forward the work of those who came before us? We explore the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Women's March and its lessons for fighting inequality. We also honor South Africa's fallen UN peacekeepers who paid the ultimate price for continental stability in the DRC and beyond.
Across Africa and the world, societies are built by ordinary people who choose to serve causes greater than themselves. Whether fighting for dignity at home or preserving peace abroad, their sacrifices form the foundation upon which future generations build. In this episode, we examine two deeply connected stories of service, courage, and collective action.
We begin by looking at the launch of South Africa’s 70-year commemoration of the historic 1956 Women's March. Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, recently launched the national program under the theme "Empowered Women Empower The Nation."
We reflect on the incredible grassroots mobilization of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW) and ask a critical question:
Does their legacy continue to offer lessons for a country still confronting gender inequality, economic exclusion, and gender-based violence?
Later in the program, we turn our attention to the unsung heroes wearing blue helmets. We explore how South Africa continues to contribute to the continent's stability on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
