Demonstrators gathered in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, to demand an immediate halt to the construction of a proposed 50-bed Ebola quarantine center at a local air force base, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported.
Residents accuse the United States of offloading health risks from the outbreak in the DRC and Uganda, warning the facility threatens public safety and local tourism. The fear has already driven some locals to leave Laikipia, prompting local leaders to join the opposition, according to the correspondent.
Despite existing Kenyan court orders barring further work, the US continues to push the project. The demonstrations on Tuesday, which disrupted schools and businesses, mark the second major protest as locals insist the government halt the initiative and consult the community.
