Kenyan Activist Arrested During Protest Against Controversial Nairobi National Park Development Plan: Correspondent
Ex-Chief Justice David Maraga was arrested Monday outside the park moments after beginning a protest against a plan to excise up to 100 acres of protected land for a $325 million convention center project, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported.
Key details:
🟠Nine other protesters were detained, and police confiscated journalists’ equipment.
🟠The government intends to clear part of the park for a parking lot, access roads, and relocate an animal orphanage.
🟠Conservationists warn the project violates zoning rules, destroys wildlife habitat, and sets a dangerous precedent.
🟠Despite public outcry, the environmental authority has issued licenses, and heavy machinery has begun clearing the forest.
