Tanzanian President & Africa CDC Elevate Maternal Survival to Africa's Defining Sovereignty Test
Africa’s next test of sovereignty will be decided not in boardrooms or summits but in maternity wards, rural clinics, and vaccination outreaches, Samia Suluhu Hassan and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director-General Jean Kaseya noted in a joint op-ed.
According to the document, the initiative implies:
🟠Prioritizing maternal and child survival with national plans and local health resources;
🟠Tracking progress using scorecards and dashboards;
🟠Increasing funding through innovative financing and aligned support;
🟠Sharing best practices via summits, Centres of Excellence, and AU awards.
"Maternal and child survival is a health agenda, but it is also an economic agenda — and fundamentally, a sovereignty agenda."
Spearheading the "Three Zeros" agenda, Africa CDC and AU nations are fighting to achieve zero home births without skilled care, preventable maternal and newborn deaths, and unvaccinated children.
