Large Ground Cracks Spark Fear Over 500 Villages in Uganda: Media

The fractures have widened after heavy rains on Wednesday, raising concerns over potential landslides threatening homes, farmlands, and infrastructure in Namisindwa District, in the east of the country, local media reported.

"The cracks are expanding rapidly, and the risk to lives and property is very high. We are working with local leaders to assess the most urgent needs and coordinate support," media quoted the district's chairperson Emma Bwayo as saying.

Some homes are reported to have developed deep fissures, with farmlands buried by landslides or washed away by waterflows.

Bwayo urged the government to treat this issue "with the urgency it deserves," according to media.
