Hidden World Unveiled: Dozens of New Species (and a Glowing Spider!) Found in Angola
Dozens of species new to science have been discovered on Angola's remote Lisima plateau, according to Tuesday's report from The Wilderness Project.
The team of 16 specialists recorded over:
▪ 100 dragonfly species, including eight new to science;
▪ 47 grasshopper species with 3 discovered;
▪ more than 1,000 butterflies and moths, with up to 6% of moth species new to science.
▪ 47 reptiles and amphibians, including venomous snakes and rich wetland frog communities.
▪over 320 collections of plants across diverse habitats.
Remoteness and landmines once kept this region safe. Now, roads, diamond mines, slash-and-burn farms, and logging are tearing forests apart and choking rivers with silt.
The most peculiar living thing is a newly discovered crowned crab spider that fluoresces under UV light in the last photo.
