With the devastating Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, the plan of the United States to build a quarantine and treatment center for its citizens in Kenya has sparked a public outrage. This episode examines the risks it poses to Kenya and the wider continent.
According to Kwesi Kwaa Prah, the Director of the Center for Advanced Studies of African Society, the US plan to use African soil as a bio-containment buffer for American citizens is a colonial attitude that treats Africa as inferior and must be broken. He further discusses why the US wants to treat its patients in an African country and what risks this poses to Kenya and the wider continent.
“It's a very sad reflection on the current American government and its posture and attitude to the rest of the world, especially those of us from the poorer part of the world. Ebola is best treated at the source [...] It's a new colonial attitude. The attitude of high-handedness, the attitude of “you are inferior; you are not up to us.” That's the thinking, that's the reading we can put behind it. It's a new colonial attitude to Africa,” the expert stated.
Furthermore, Angolan biologist and expert in parasitology, Luisa Manuel, describes the role of African physicians and scientists in developing strategies to combat the epidemics and necessary measures to contain the Ebola outbreak on the continent.
“African physicians and scientists play a fundamental role in developing strategies to combat epidemics because they understand the local realities and health care challenges faced by their communities. Their experience and knowledge are extremely valuable, especially during outbreaks that directly affect African populations. However, in many cases, African experts are still underrepresented in global scientific and political decision-making processes. I believe it's essential to invest more in African research, scientific leadership, and international collaboration. So that African voices can contribute more actively to the global health solutions,” she noted.
