Ruto Defends Washington-Backed Ebola Facility Amid Wave of Criticism: Media

The Kenyan president said he had approved the facility at the US request, based on long-standing health cooperation on COVID-19, a Western news outlet reported.

He argued that Kenya must be ready for possible Ebola cases among both Kenyans and foreign partners, it added.

"We are a responsible government. We know what we are doing," Ruto said.

The initiative, which would create a quarantine site for US citizens at a central Kenyan military air base, has reportedly drawn growing opposition. On Monday, Nanyuki residents and local officials protested, warning of possible Ebola risks and questioning why Kenya should host the center for Americans.

Legal action has also been launched to stop the project, and a court has temporarily halted the plan over public health concerns, according to the outlet.
