Kenya Railways Revives 46-Year Dormant Nyahururu Freight Line
The train transported 396 tonnes of subsidized "Rail Mavuno" fertilizer from Athi River Railway Station to National Cereals and Produce Board depots in Ol Kalou and Nyahururu, Kenya Railways reported.
The fertilizer will support farmers in Nyandarua and Laikipia counties — key producers of potatoes, carrots, cabbages, peas, horticultural crops, and wheat.
The revived line has already attracted interest from major players in fertilizer, cement, dairy logistics, and general freight, with additional opportunities for construction materials and livestock transport. It will also offer passenger services, reportedly providing safe, affordable, and eco-friendly transport to local communities.
The resumption is expected to:
▪ lower transportation costs;
▪ stimulate trade and investment;
▪ create jobs;
▪ promote tourism;
▪ strengthen regional integration.
